As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
- Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
