British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
